Divas You Don't Know by Milia Ayache is a one-woman cabaret charting diva stars by compass. Through song, movement, and dramatic monologue performed in English, Arabic, French, Italian, and Russian, Ayache explores our relationship to the raw power of the singing voice.
Navigating varied cultural and historic landscapes, she investigates the legacies and converging struggles of three transnational stars—Maya Kristalinskaya, Asmahan, and Dalida. In a fraught political era that corners us into choosing sides, this is a story of women who didn’t. From a Soviet star relegated to touring backwoods cultural centers to legends of Egypt and France, their lives are connected by a compass rose, the tragedy of darkness, and pronounced black eyeliner.
This intimate performance illuminates the afterglow of these celestial voices, prompting audiences to remember the divas in their own lives—beginning with their mothers' voices. Divas You Don't Know introduces these unique singers to a new generation. Eyeliner optional. Open mind required.
